The Inflatable Bodies are computer-controlled robotic fabric sculptures, capable of fluid movement and interaction with humans in dynamic, visceral new ways. The innovation of a pneumatic, universal joint permits an unprecedented range and kind of movement that is as broad as that for muscle and bone, but with little of the mass. The new robotic forms that result are compelling because they conform neither to standard conceptions of robotics, nor to existing understandings of kinetic sculpture, and give rise to practically limitless potential for improvisational performance and interactive installation.
The metal joints used in previous ARW works allowed for a full range of motion, but remained rigid. The Inflatables make use of a uniquely-designed flexible muscle and bone system. A fabric, four-muscle Universal joint permits minutely calibrated movements. The flexibility of this joint arises in the ability to relax the bone and create movements that conventional robotics cannot. The angle and motions of the joint are driven by inflatable muscles connected to air valves under computer control. The forces involved are measured with a feedback potentiometer mounted on the joint. While one muscle is inflating, the other is deflating, making for a powerful source of energy from a system that is much lighter than similar systems built with conventional cylinders and motors, and is capable of a much greater range of shapes than the air muscles that are commercially available from pneumatics companies. Our specially designed muscle shapes allow for a surprisingly large range of motion. Furthermore, the fabric itself allows for integrated stretch sensors that detect the movement of the muscles for a more accurate feedback system and ultimately a more highly refined control of the Bodies.
Using existing high-end, military technology for artistic ends has struck a chord with providers of materials and technology. During our prototyping stages, fabric, servo, and adhesive companies have expressed in interest in helping ARW reach its goals with this exciting new concept. But, because the Inflatables make use of bladders of shapes and sizes that are not commercially available, the project has necessitated the design and construction of machines that make it possible for ARW to manufacture bladders in-house. As the work has evolved, it has given birth to a whole new set of innovative machines that assist in the production of the component bladders for the Inflatable Bodies; machines such as the "U Muscle Machine", a "Muscle Rolling Machine", and a "Muscle Pressing Machine" are only the first of what will be many machines ARW will build to help create all aspects of the Inflatable Bodies.
